Alternate Reality Game, Rodeo, and Tour
Location: The Internet + U.S.A.
When I was traveling across country and running Lawn Games for Life in Fall 2006, a sign caught my eye along a dusty Arizona desert road on my way to a hiking trail amidst the
cacti of the southwest. The hand-stenciled sign read "Preservation of the Cowboy Way Society," and I immediately thought about what the cowGIRL way might be like.
Later, pigtailed and in Las Cruces, Texas, I went to a history museum and stumbled upon tons of photos of cowgirls wrangling steers in local rodeos and in New York's Madison Square Gardens.
I was looking at images of southwestern tomboys doing cowgirl things in the slick city I'd needed a break from, my New York. I decided that I
was faithfully finding my path along the cowgirl way, and thus the seeds were laid for this project.
I am currently working on an alternate reality game and rodeo tour
based on The Cowgirl Way, where people are animals and gender doesn't matter. The online portion of the game is scheduled to officially
premier in January 2011, but I'll be running related live and online events on a monthly basis until then to experiment with the
format and design as well as to build up an audience and recruit cowgirls.
